Discover Bobby Burn in Mauchline

Known locally as Burns country, it comes as no surprise that the famous poet grew up and lived here in East Ayrshire. There are a number of Burns related things to do in the area, starting with the Burns House Museum in Mauchline. This tiny museum houses a wealth of memorabilia, with informative videos and writings, plus the guides are exceedingly knowledgeable. Next, grab a Robert Burns Blue Plaque map, showcasing 23 points of interest nearby and enjoy an informative Burns trail.

Dumfries House

DUMFRIES HOUSETake a grand tour of this beautiful house and estate, dating back to the 18th century and set in a whopping 2000 acres. General admission is free, though tours of the house and entry to the walled garden incur a small and very reasonable price. Open year round, there’s a collection of old and modern art work, furniture and various other antiques. When it’s time to take a break, check out the cafe and grab a coffee and a slice of cake!

Scottish Dark Sky Observatory

At the edge of Galloway Forest Park (also known as the dark park), set on the banks of Loch Doon, sits Scotland’s Dark Sky Observatory. This is a fantastic place to visit and to learn more about the night sky and enjoy the chance to use the powerful telescopes yourself to view the moon, satellites and other planets. You’re at the mercy of the weather, but if it’s cloudy or wet there are plenty of interesting presentations to enjoy, and the knowledgeable team are on hand to answer any questions.
